Blogspot SEO
I was talking a few days ago with a friend that’s into web developing and the discussion turned into a SEO debate. I mentioned Blogger SEO optimization and the friend’s reaction was: “Blogspot SEO optimization?! Is that even possible?”
Yes! Blogspot SEO optimization is possible!
I know, I know, it is not on WordPress level, don’t get started on that, but it is possible and it is also very efficient. I have a lot of experience with Blogspot (about 10 years) and I have made many SEO experiments with it. My conclusion was that a Blogspot blog can compete with a WordPress blog when it comes to SEO. Hey, if you don’t believe me, feel free to try it yourself.
OK, but this article is not about WordPress versus Blogger, it is about Blogspot SEO optimization, so let’s get started.

1. The Address Name of Your Blog

When you want to start a blog on Blogspot (see How to Start a Blog on Blogspot) you have to pick an address name for your new blog. You can start building your SEO by choosing a name which includes keywords that are relevant to your blogging subject.
For example, you are going to write about building boats, so your link can look something like building-boats-online.blogspot.com. So your link contains keywords that you are going to use into your blog. You can also use keywords in the description of your blog.

2. The Title of Your Posts

The titles of you articles have to be accurate and not too long. Try to keep it under 50 characters (including spaces). Also don’t forget to use the desired keywords (for the specific article) in the title of the post.

I am going to push this title optimization a little further.
When a post of yours appears in Google, the title in the search engine will look something like this: Title of your blog: Title of your post – that doesn’t look very healthy for the SEO of your article title.
In order to change this, go to your Dashboard->Template-> Edit HTML
blogger_dashboard_edit_html

Click on the code box and hit Ctrl+F.
Search for:

blogger_title_tag
After you find it, replace it with the following piece of code:

So now your code will look like this:
replaced_title_blogspotSave your template and you are done. Now your posts have individual titles without the blog title in front.

3. Customize The Permalinks

While writing a post, you can see on the right side of the editor the options available for permalinks. This is a pretty new feature added by Google to Blogger platform and it is very helpful for SEO optimization. So you can use only the keywords of your article and eliminate the “stop words” like “a”, “an”, “the”, etc. Check out the screenshots below to see what I am talking about.
With default (automatic) permalink:permalink-optimization_blogspot

Customized permalink:
cutomized-permalink-blogspotSo, this is a way of avoiding long links. You can also use underscore “_” to separate the words in the permalink but I strongly recommend you NOT to do it for SEO reasons. So stick to the minus “-“.

4. Don’t Forget About The Keywords

Keywords in Blogspot are equally important as on a self hosted website. If you are not familiar with the “Keywords” term check out this post first.
When you are writing and article, don’t forget to use your desired keywords in:

  • The title of the post
  • The permalink of the post
  • The meta-tags / labels
  • The body of your post – Publish articles in relevance to the post title and include necessary keywords in the post . Never stuff keywords trying to manipulate the search engines, because your post will look weird and spammy. It will drive the reader away and you can be penalized by  Google for keywords spam. Write your post then read it and see where you can insert keywords so that it looks natural.

5. Use Proper Labels And Related Postslabels

Lables are a plus for the keywords density of your posts. Many blogger do the mistake of using labels only as major categories of their blog which is a SEO optimization loss.
Labels also affect related posts widgets in Blogger – if there are many posts tagged with similar labels, it will affect the arrangement of articles in related posts.

6. Use Nofollow For External Links

Nofollow is an HTML attribute which tells the search engine not to follow a specific link from your website, so this is how you block the search engine advantage for that external link. In Blogger you can select HTML section of the post window and add rel=”nofollow” attribute just after URL to prevent search engines from crawling a particular link.

7. Optimize Blogspot images for SEOimages

Use images for Blogspot SEO optimization.
Making your articles pretty by using images is great. But if we use them right, you can also have a SEO advantage.
Use a good name for every image before uploading it. Also add an alt tag and title tag for all the images you upload.
Regarding the images, be careful about the Copyright.

8. Take Care Of The Comment Sectioncomment-section

Comments are great! They are user generated content.
Links from the comment section of Blogspot are nofollow marked by default, which is great because you don’t have to be worried about that.
Sadly, there are many comment spammers. So, you will have to moderate those in order to keep it clean.
When you reply to the readers’ comments try to include keywords in your text. By doing this it will add up to the keyword density of the post.
Google has integrated Google plus comment form with Blogspot, so you should enable it. By doing this, it will ensure that you get higher social media interaction and share for your post.

9. Link Building

Yes, link building also works for Blogspot as it works for any sub-domain or link.
Personally, I would not work on link building for a Blogspot blog, but if you intend to stick to your Blogspot address you can do it.

I believe that I’ve covered a big chunk of the Blogspot SEO optimization subject and I really hope this will be helpful for you guys.

Thank you for this wonderful article about Blogspot SEO optimization.
I have one question: Why do you recommend dashes “-” instead of underscore “_” when it comes to links?
